Nested Sims
What if a simulated civilization eventually became advanced enough to create simulations of its own?
Nested Simulations take the simulation hypothesis one step further by proposing that artificial realities could exist inside other artificial realities. Instead of a single simulated universe, reality could consist of multiple layers stacked on top of one another.
Much like Russian nesting dolls, one simulated world might contain civilizations that eventually develop the technology to create entirely new simulated worlds beneath them.
The Core Concept
The idea grows naturally from the broader simulation hypothesis. If advanced civilizations can create realistic simulated environments containing conscious beings, then some of those simulated civilizations might eventually reach the same technological capability.
Once that happens, simulations could begin generating additional simulations, creating an expanding hierarchy of realities.
In such a model, there may be no easy way to determine whether a civilization exists in the original reality or somewhere deeper within the chain.
A Universe Within A Universe
Every layer of a nested simulation could operate according to its own rules, history, and physical laws. To the inhabitants living inside a particular level, reality would appear completely normal and consistent.
Relationships, emotions, scientific discoveries, and everyday experiences would feel just as authentic as they do in our own world.
The only difference would be that each reality exists within a larger framework beyond its awareness.
The Probability Question
Nested simulations become especially interesting when viewed through probability.
If each advanced civilization creates many simulations, and some of those simulations eventually create more simulations, then the number of conscious observers could increase dramatically with every additional layer.
Under this framework, most observers might statistically exist somewhere within the nested structure rather than in the original base reality.
Could Nested Simulations Be Detected?
The theory raises difficult questions about whether multiple layers of reality could leave detectable traces.
Some researchers have speculated that unusual aspects of physics, information limits, or computational constraints might hint at an underlying structure. Others have suggested that apparent fine-tuning within the universe could be interpreted through a simulation-based lens.
At present, however, there is no scientific evidence that reality is simulated or contains nested layers.
Why Nested Simulations Matter
Nested simulations expand the simulation hypothesis beyond a single artificial world and into a potentially vast hierarchy of realities.
The concept combines ideas from philosophy, computer science, probability, and futurism while raising deeper questions about consciousness, existence, and the nature of reality itself.
